Frequently Asked Questions

Here you will find answers to all of the frequently asked questions my team and I receive. Click the pink box or arrow for the answer to drop down.

What are the basic ingredients every baker should have?

Flour, sugar, eggs, butter, baking powder, and vanilla extract are the essentials for most recipes. Keeping some chocolate chips, nuts, and spices like cinnamon handy is also a great idea.

Why is my cake sinking in the middle?

This usually happens when the oven door is opened too soon, or the batter is overmixed. It could also be due to using expired baking powder or baking soda.

How do I prevent cookies from spreading too much?

Ensure your butter is not too soft or melted. Chilling the dough before baking and using parchment paper instead of greased pans can also help.

What’s the best way to measure flour?

Always use a spoon to scoop flour into your measuring cup and level it off with a knife. Avoid scooping directly from the bag, as it packs the flour and results in too much.

Can I substitute butter with oil in recipes?

Yes, but the texture and flavor might change. Use ¾ cup of oil for every 1 cup of butter and consider using neutral oils like vegetable or canola oil.

How do I know when my cake is fully baked?

Insert a toothpick into the center of the cake. If it comes out clean or with a few dry crumbs, your cake is done!
